If you don't know what you want, it's
because your don't know who you are.
Once you know what you want and can choose
it, you'll know who you are!
How to know what you
want
During
a coffee break in a motivational seminar, Robert Barnes, a frustrated
attendee, asked me, “How can I know what I want? Is there some special
process for figuring it out, when you don’t know what you want?”
He continued,
“I’ve been reading self-help books and attending workshops forever,
taking almost every seminar available, but nothing seems to help. I
think that’s because I don’t know what I want. So, tell me, how do I
find out what I want?”
I answered,
“That’s easy, Robert. First, make a list of everything you have in your
life that you don’t want; then make a want list that would cancel out
every item on the don’t-want list.” You’ll find this exercise a little
farther into this chapter. In the meantime, let’s look at what’s behind
the question, “How can I come to know what I want?”
What makes
Robert’s question most interesting is that almost everyone, if they
would admit to it, has the same question They don’t know what they want
and don’t know how to figure it out.
The question is
doubly interesting because it isn’t the real question. The question
behind that question is, “How will I come to know, for sure, who I
really am when I don’t know what I want?” The answer to both questions
is, you’ll know who you are when you finally decide what belongs in
your life and what doesn’t. Practice on the little decisions and you'll
begin to know who you are and what you want.
