Hi %$firstname$% -
Is That Really What
You Heard?
Years ago, as owner and
manager of my own company, while in a staff meeting, I called attention to the
fact that our new sales goal had not been met.
When confronted with the
responsibility for this deficiency, my Sales Manager blamed the problem on an
assumed shortage of production people to do the work. He said he was afraid of
the increase in sales, because he believed our production department couldn't
handle the increased volume.
My Production Manager
defended his department with what he considered a logical response. He said it
made no sense to hire more people until we had the sales to support the need for
additional men.
So, I called a separate
meeting that day with just the Sales Manager and the Production Manager. My intention
was to convince
them that their doubts and lack of trust in each other was the barrier to the
increased sales volume we all said we wanted. Pleased with myself that I had given what I
considered an inspired and convincing talk that had each of them shaking their
head in agreement, I closed the meeting.
But then I had second
thoughts, and on a hunch, I asked each of them to repeat in their own words
exactly what I had just said. I found no similarity in their two very different
versions of my meaning.
I walked away from that
meeting speechless, shaking my head in dismay and disgust. What I had said to
them in that meeting, and what they each heard was so far from what I intended,
I might as well have been speaking to the blank walls in that room for all the
good my talk did!
Why hadn't they heard me?
They didn't hear me, because they each had heard my talk
through a filtering device,
based on what they each came into the meeting
already believing.
Such is the power of the ego to twist and turn all input
to fit our current concept of reality. Ego takes everything we read, hear or see
and runs it through a filtering process, so that the new information looks and
feels like what we already believe. It's
either that or it rejects the input entirely.
Anything that doesn't fit the current reality concept,
gets rejected. And therein lies the problem with my attempt to make a
difference in your life.
That's Why You May Not Hear Me
If what I share with you each week were not contrary to
what you already believe, it could not possibly make even the slightest
difference in the quality of your life, could it? And if you sift everything I
tell you through a filtering device, there's little hope that you'll ever be
able to use this information to change the quality of your life.
Actually, that's not true! There is hope. You do have
the power to choose out of your box at anytime. But will you, and if so, when?
Your only real barrier to having the life you want is your
very own self-limiting concept of reality.
That and your self-concept, create the box in which you live. What you want
from life that you don't already have is always outside that box, say
"Here I am, come and get me!"
So, if you're unhappy with current circumstances and
know you want life to get better, what will it take to get YOU out of that box?
What will it take to get you to say, "Here I am, come and get me!"
You'll choose out, only.....
-
When that old box becomes so uncomfortable you can no
longer stand it.
-
When you want something outside the box so bad you can
taste it.
-
When your current reality no longer serves you.
Until then, you won't be hearing what I have to say
because it doesn't fit your current reality concept.
Your ego resists the idea of becoming rich in wealth,
health and relationships, because being
rich is contrary to the role you've chosen to play.
