Hi %$firstname$%,
A simple way to
take charge of your thinking
and
change the quality of your life forever.
Moving past the barriers
As a self-made millionaire, presenting workshops from coast
to coast, I have, for 36 years, coached and mentored workshop participants and
clients in the process of finding and removing their barriers to becoming
rich. Since writing "So, Why Aren't You Rich?" in 1999, however, I have
discovered a more direct and effective way of moving participants past their
barriers.
When someone tells
me their victim story, I ask,
Who would you be
Being if that were no longer a problem?
That confronting question takes the one with a problem
right past that problem to the problem's solution. That question has
transformational powers because the solution to almost any problem will be
found in a simple change of attitude about the problem.
To see the power in this simple question, you must accept
that a change in the way you think and feel about your problem changes its
significance. That change in the problem's importance does nothing about DOING
something to solve the problem; it changes how you relate to the problem,
making it suddenly solvable where before it seemed not to be.
After the appropriate attitude adjustment, the perceived
problem becomes an opportunity.
Step eight of
the nine steps out of your box:
... learn the
secret to overcoming the resistance
Almost everyone has a problem. So what's your problem? In
regard to that problem, my question for you is:
Who would you be BEING if that were no longer a problem?
He was ready to quit!
When one of my clients came to me for counseling, he was
ready to quit his job. Upset with his boss he said, "I love my job, but he is
trying to make me over into a clone of himself. If I can't be me in my job,
I'll have no choice but to quit!"
My client was hoping I would tell him what he could DO that
would solve his problem with his boss. Instead, I asked him the BEING
question. I said "Who would you be BEING if you were receptive to being
coached as the one who would some day take over that business?"
His shocked response: "Damn, this isn't about him! It's
about me, isn't it?" I introduced my client to the Power Pause, a three step
process for bypassing his problem, to BEING it's solution. Then he used the
Power Pause to change who he was BEING in his relationship to his boss. Six
months later, his boss walked out the door and handed my client the keys.
Was this some kind of miracle?
Was my client's good fortune some kind of miracle? Was it a
coincidence that he inherited that business? No -- not really! Changing your
way of BEING, as in choosing a new way of relating to the problem, can solve
almost any problem you can name. That's because your real problem is not with
the circumstances, but rather in your way of BEING relative to those
circumstances.
Going back to my previous example, as long as my client
continued to see his boss as a domineering, do-it-my-way employer, he could
never have solved his problem. Any attempt he made to change his boss's way of
being would have failed and he would have had to quit. To solve the problem,
my client changed the only thing he could change -- his own attitude about the
problem.
As soon as he allowed himself to see his boss's coaching as
a blessing and an opportunity, not a threat, his whole future in that job
changed instantaneously. In that moment, he had transformed himself into one
who no longer had that problem.
If you choose to see the above situation's solution as a
change in what my client was doing, you will have missed the point. The change
that solved his problem was the change he made in who he was BEING relative to
the perceived problem. You'll gain greater benefits from this example if you
can see that his perceived problem was never the real problem.
The solution to my clients problem was never a change in
the circumstances, but a change of perception about those circumstances
-- a change of attitude. I can just hear your mind chatter right now, telling
you that this example doesn't fit your circumstances. If you are noticing mind
chatter I would suggest reviewing the Power Pause and how it can be used as
the solution to all types of problems.
