Well It's been
two weeks since we began the discussion about "choosing" and I would like to continue today. If you
would like to review what we talked about, below is the link to the newsletter

Why we can’t
choose
If we are stuck in our current reality, if we can’t see
that we could have chosen differently, we’ll need to take another look at our
other options. Other ways to go will show up for us if we are open to the
possibility! We pretend there’s no way out only because we don’t want to choose
and then be responsible for our choice. There is always a way out.
Each time we’re faced with some form of confrontation,
challenge, or circumstance that we don’t like, there are always several options:
we can choose to give in, fight or run; when faced with the need for a decision,
we can, say yes, no or maybe. When the phone rings, we can choose to answer it
or not; the list of options available can go on and on.
Life is about
making choices,
And choosing is a
self-discovery process.
Choosing not to
choose
Even when we think we’re not choosing, we’re choosing – not
to choose. When we are reacting to life’s circumstances, we are choosing who to
be. Each of those choices seems to be about choosing what to DO, when in fact,
each and every choice is a decision about who to BE when faced with that
situation in life. Each time we act, react, give in, fight or run, we are
choosing a way to BE, either creating new patterns in our lives or maintaining
the old one.
Something we don’t choose for fear of the consequences, and
sometimes we don’t choose because we haven’t a clue that we have a choice in the
matter. But there is always a choice. If we are not choosing, we are choosing
not to choose, which is choosing!
Life has a habit of confronting us with circumstances
designed to move us to the point of choosing, so that in choosing, we come to
know who we are. We see, that’s the only way we will discover who we are – by
choosing. Try it! Notice how powerful you feel just knowing that you have given
yourself the right to choose.
And then we might want to consider our choices as the true
measure of our consciousness.
How do I choose?
When I suggest that becoming rich is just a matter of
choice, the question I hear most is, “How do I choose to be rich?” The problem
with that question is that, there is no “HOW” when it comes to choosing. We just
choose. Or maybe I should say, we choose or we don’t. To see why I say that,
imagine being at the local ice cream store with countless flavors to choose
from. Now, if we ask ourselves, “How do I choose?” Silly question, isn’t it?
Or imagine ourselves at the end of a diving board looking
down at the swimming pool; then ask, “How do I jump?” If we are asking our
coach, “How do I get from the end of the diving board into the pool?” that’s
another silly question. Obviously, we just jump, head first, feet first, or
belly first with a big splash. Or we don’t jump and ask a question, like “How do
I jump?”
The real question, here, is to choose or not to choose – or
as Shakespeare might have said it, the real question is,
“To BE or not to
BE” the one who can choose
Pretty wise man – that Shakespeare. He was asking the right
question way back then. I wonder how many heard what he was really saying?
By their choices
shall ye know them
The actual quote in the Bible reads, by their fruits shall
ye know them. This is just the reverse way of saying that what we have in life
must correspond exactly to who we are. In other words, who we are (our
self-concept) determines what we can have; therefore, what we have tells us who
we are – or better yet, tells US who we are.
I would like to take this observation a step further. When
I coach people I pay close attention to their choices. I will know who they are
when I see what they’ve chosen for themselves. The game of Life is set up so
that we can only choose that which belongs to us by right of consciousness. If
it were otherwise, there would be no need for us to grow, and that would defeat
the purpose of the game.
Consciousness
I’m using the term ‘consciousness’ as a measure of one’s
concept of reality as it relates to being self-aware and in charge of one’s
life.
In other words, CONSCIOUSNESS is:
Ø
A measure of our being aware of our inner power, the presence of
God in us.
Ø
The degree to which we are exercising the power of choice.
Ø
The degree to which our concept of reality no longer limits us.
Ø
Our self-concept as it relates to our self-esteem and our
self-worth.
Ø
A measure of our ability to side-step ego’s resistance, to
thinking outside the box.
That stuff we
want, that we don’t have
Is on the next
level of the game board (consciousness)
&
We will only be
allowed to claim it
When we grow tall
enough (in consciousness) to reach it.
The sad part about not being able to choose is not that we
won’t have what we want; the real tragedy in not choosing is that we won’t know
who we are and haven’t realized that our purpose in life is to choose and find
out.
We have chosen who we would BE, and what we have now is the
result of that choice. So think about the fact that we have already chosen and
we will talk more about that next week.
