Hello %$first name$% and welcome to this week's edition
of my newsletter.
How can we know what we want?
How do we find out what we want? It’s actually very
simple. First, we make a list of everything we have in our life that we don’t
want. Then make a want list that would cancel out every item on the don’t-want
list.
Almost
everyone, if they would admit to it, has the same question. We don’t know what
we want and don’t know how to figure it out. The question is doubly
interesting because it isn’t the real question. The real question is,
“How can we know what we want when we
don’t really know who we are?” The answer to that question is, we will know
who we are when we know for sure what belongs in our life and what doesn’t.
Becoming clear about what we want
If we don’t know what we want from life, it’s because we
don’t know who we are. Therefore, becoming
clear about what we want and don’t want from life could very well be the most
important thing we could do for ourselves in terms of finding our true self.
Knowing what we want from life and then
choosing it,
takes
us yet another step closer to
knowing who we really are!
When we know
who we are, we’ll know what belongs in our life; if we don’t already have it,
we WILL choose it.
So, how will we know who we are?
We will know who we are by observing what’s
happening in our life right now, by accepting that the content of our life is
there as the result of a previous BEING choice. Everything we have in our life
is there because it belongs with us; it fits who we’ve chosen to BE.
So, now
might be a good time to take inventory of the circumstances, conditions, and
relationships we have in our lives that we could do without. Allow ourselves
to see that those problems exist because they fit who we are BEING. Now, we
should ask ourselves who we would be BEING if our problems were no longer
there. Again, notice that this question takes us right past our perceived
problem to BEING its solution.
We
will know who we are
As soon as we’ve given ourselves the power
To say “no” to what we don’t want.
It is
important for us to realize, that we can’t choose a solution to our problem
because the problem belongs with who we are BEING. We can’t know what we want
(the solution) until we allow ourselves to see that it is who we are BEING
that is causing the problem. Once we have latched onto and chosen the BEING
solution to our problem we will know for sure what we want—what really belongs
with our new BEING choice.
If we don’t
like what we see in our lives, we need to know that we can create a different
reality with a new BEING choice. The hidden bonus here is that we will grow in
stature in terms of how we perceive ourselves each time we give ourselves
permission to raise the bar on our standard of living. Knowing what we want
begins with knowing what we don’t want and in allowing ourselves to want life
to be better.
The Want/Don’t Want Exercise
To do this exercise yourself, divide a lined pad
into two equal columns. In the left-hand column, make a list of the things and
circumstances in your life that you really don’t want. When you’ve finished
your don’t-want list, make your want list in the right-hand column, listing
what you want opposite what you don’t want, so that each want cancels out an
item on the don’t want list.
Once you
complete the exercise you will know what you want. Prioritize the want list
and begin to think about who you would need to be BEING in order to have the
top items on your BE reality.
Knowing what we want is only the first step
Once we know what we want from life, the next and
most important step is in choosing to BE the one who will have what we want
from life.
If we have a
problem that keeps us from having the life we want, we need to ask ourselves
this question: Who
would I be BEING if that were no longer a problem.
Have fantastic weekend and I look forward
to talking with you next week.
