Hi %$firstname$% -
When that
feather bed is no longer comfortable,
it's time
you got out of bed
Whenever I see a
feather bed, I'm reminded not to get too attached to my successes in life.
During World War II,
on rare occasions, I spent my nights on a straw mattress supported by an
Army cot. After a great many nights of sleeping on the ground in a pup
tent, this straw mattress on a cot was the ultimate in comfort.
But then one night I
got lucky; I spent the night on a feather bed and it felt like sleeping on
a cloud!
It happened like
this: On an overnight trip across part of Germany, the mess truck to which
I was assigned, had a flat tire. By the time the flat tire was fixed, our
truck convoy had moved on and we found ourselves lost.
We stopped to ask
directions at a full-staffed, soon to be opened officers' club. They
insisted that we stay the night, even though we weren't officers,
apologizing because they had no food to offer. And of course, this was no
problem, because we had truck full of food.
So that evening, their chef
served up an unbelievable gourmet meal, prepared out of plain ordinary
Army food from our mess truck. And I spent the night floating on a cloud
-- on a made-in-heaven feather bed.
I was certain that night, as I slipped
under that down comforter to lay my body on that feather mattress, I would
never, ever, want to get up. But I was wrong! Come morning, that feather
mattress was no longer comfortable.
As great as
that night on a feather mattress was, I needed no bugle to get me out of
bed that morning. I'd had enough of a good thing and just had to get up.
So, why am I telling you this story? Because life is like that!
We
go through life finding safe, secure and comfortable situations, thinking
each time, that we've got it made. We keep forgetting that life is a
journey, not a destination. Sooner or later, safe is no longer satisfying
and we must move on.
The creative
process for mankind is BE DO HAVE, but each time we've used that process
to create the desired end result, we've not allowed ourselves to see
beyond that immediate success.
We experience each
new triumph as though it were the end of the road. We become unhappy when
yesterday's victory no longer satisfies.
In fact, much of our unhappiness in
life comes from trying to hang on to yesterday's success. And while
hanging on, in vain, to yesterday's satisfaction, we ignore our power to
make new BEING choices.
Your unhappiness will go away when
you detach yourself from whatever made yesterday seem so great.
Spirit's eternal mandate in you is
that you continue growing in consciousness. But your ego's mission in life
is to maintain the status quo. It's ego hanging on to status quo that
blocks your growth.
So the question you should be asking
yourself is, "If my current reality is no longer satisfying, why am I
hanging on to it?"
If you don't have what you want from
life, it is outside the box. And having it, is an outside-the-box
experience. Think about the great life you're giving up in order to remain
in a box that no longer suits you and then choose out of that box!
